Sunday, Febryary 22nd, 2026
7-9 Mountain Time
Hosts: Dan, Mark, & Terri
Participants: YOU!
This month’s firesides correspond to the beginning of Lent, a time of fasting, prayer, and shared love in preparation for Easter, celebrated by most other Christian faiths. It re-enacts Jesus’ forty-day fast in the wilderness, practically applied to our daily lives. Christians practicing lent often “fast” from something they would otherwise enjoy, and place special focus on contemplation, meditation, and prayer. Lent culminates during Holy Week, where special attention is given to the final days of Jesus’ life, from Palm Sunday through Maundy Thursday, the Last Supper, marking the end of Lent.
According to the LDS Gospel Topic on Easter, “Latter-day Saints conduct Easter Sunday services but do not follow the religious observances of Ash Wednesday, Lent, or Holy Week.” This is true in the sense that the Church does not teach or focus in any way on Lent, but many Latter-day Saints, current, nuanced, and former, have found Lent to be deeply fulfilling and spiritually rewarding.
In our firesides for February, held on the first Thursday and Sunday after Ash Wednesday, we’ll explore how many of us honor and “practice” Lent, either formally within another Christian faith, or informally in our own way and form. Our intent isn’t to say that there is a right way or wrong way to practice Lent; rather, we hope to share our experiences, strength, and ideas as to how to increase our spirituality and love by means of Lent.
We may explore questions or ideas such as:
- What is Lent according to Christian Tradition and practice?
- What does Lent symbolize for me?
- Is it appropriate to participate in Ash Wednesday if we are not Catholic (or of another Lent-practicing faith)?
- What does it mean to “fast” for lent?
- What are some of the various ways to practice Lent as a (current, nuanced, former) Latter-day Saint?
- What might I realize spiritually by practicing Lent?
- Do I need to have traditional beliefs about Jesus Christ to practice Lent?
- How will Lent help me in my spiritual journey?
All are welcome. Bring your heart. Bring your questions.
It will be a delightful evening. Join in!
